This is going to be another one of many for the future. Runner safety, Dog-gone it: Four-Legged Running Companions, was also a lot about safety, but now let’s get down to the nitty gritty. The focus of this week’s topics is running safety measures. Whether you run for therapy, fun, relaxation, connection to the world, and so on, this is something that should always and continually touched upon.
Both Coach Thor and Intern Loki have helped with this article, and I am going to hopefully have my outdoor safety keychains launched on this site in the next few days and they will also remain on Etsy page for sale.
I really want to promote runner safety, whether you are a trail runner or a road runner, you can never be too safe; whether you are running alone or in a group, it is a very important topic.
Here are some tips to help you on your runs-
- Trust your intuition
- Stay away from “cat calling”
- Learn self defense
- Don’t be predictable i.e. change up your running routine
- That being said plan your routes with safety in mind
- Let a loved one know your route that day, so they know where to look for you if they need too.
- Try running with your local run club or crew
- Make yourself visible in the dark, just because something is deemed reflective despite it being black you should have lights and bright colors on. Not all areas are well lit
- Also try to plan runs in well-lit areas if available
- Carry your cell phone, it may not be ideal to some, but in case of emergency it is there. And always be sure to CALL THE POLICE in emergency situations.
- Run against traffic, obey traffic signals, and look both ways before crossing
- When available run on sidewalks
- Don’t assume you have the right away in a crosswalk, drivers can be distracted wait for them to stop before crossing
- If using headphones, it is highly suggested to keep it low and don’t zone out, you want to be fully aware of your surroundings.
- If running with a dog, make sure they have proper training and run safely with them. For more tips, refer back to Dog-gone it: Four-Legged Running Companions.
- Overall- BE ALERT!
And these tips are not just exclusive anyone, everyone is subject to being hurt or attacked or whatnot on a run, it’s unfortunate. Therefore, no matter what do everything to keep yourself and the people around you safe when you are on you are on runs. And if you follow these tips you can have a safe enjoyable run.
