Onions – Better for you than you will admit

This week’s subject, is ew, for a lot of people, but it is one of my favorite vegetables and it is actually extremely healthy for you — onions! There are a variety of onions out there, yellow, red, white, purple, Spanish and Vidalia.    Onions are a part of the genus allium family, which means they are related to the equally awesome – garlic, shallots, and leeks. Allicin is a powerful antibiotic found in these vegetables, that make them powerful and giving them potential healing properties.

That being said, let’s take a look at the benefits of eating onions

  • Lower risk of stomach cancer
  • Lower risk of heart disease and/or stroke
  • Helps manage diabetes
  • Low risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease
  • Increase in sperm count

Onions are an amazing source, of vitamin C and B6, potassium, manganese, and cooper.

The nutritional value of 1 cup of chopped onions is

64 Calories

14.9 grams carbs

.16 grams fat

2.72 grams fiber

6.78 grams sugar

1.76 grams protein

Despite the benefits, there are negatives and some risks

  • Potential Allergies/Intolerance
  • Body Odor from eating too much
  • Can make IBS worse
  • Makes you cry

With all that onions are actually really good for you and if you can tolerate it be considered as part of your diet.  Check out this week a new recipe that includes onions and apple cider vinegar (future subject).   And this will not be the last time, we take a look at the Allicin family, coming up on Halloween,  a special on GARLIC.
