Hal Higdon is the longest contributor for Runner’s World and has authored numerous books; in addition to being a part of the Olympic Trials 8 times and winning 4 Masters Championships; his training plans emphasis strength training to improve speed. Per his website, “Runners need to improve their speed and one of the best ways to do that is with strength training,” claims Cathy Vasto (“Hal Higdon Training Programs,” n.d.). For the purpose of this plan utilizing some of the tools of training per Higdon is essential and can be easily done with little to no additional equipment.
Exercises I like to use are based on Higdon’s Website with strength training is the curl, the crunch and the lunge with a general progression. As well as additional exercises, but not limited to push-ups, the squat, and the sit-up to help focus on the same areas in Higdon’s plan
